Deliberate Attack Example In Armored Knights

This is an example of a Deliberate Attack in the game Armored Knights - Guderian Crosses the Meuse.

Main campaign, Turn 13, German Deliberate Attack Phase.

The Germans are attacking with

  1. a battalion of infantry supported by a company each of assault guns and 88's.  The 88's were a last second add to get the proper unit density to bring in artillery - I needed 6 stacking points.  There is also a heavy weapons company in support on hex south.  I saw mention of this capability in the Armored Knights Case Blue - Don Bend examples of play booklet.
  2. three units of Stukas
  3. a heavy artillery unit from XIX Corps
  4. both MI points from XIX Corp and a leader point from Guderian
The French are defending with
  1. a battalion of infantry supported by a company each of light AA and engineers
  2. heavy artillery from 71st Division
The Germans are attacking across a bridge, so the units doing so are reduced to x0.25.
Stukas are attacking a Hedgehog, so their multiplier is x1.
Artillery is attacking against 6 SP of soft units, so they get a x1.5 multiplier

French artillery gets a x2 multiplier against the assaulting units.  I made a judgement call here not to include the heavy weapons company, which would have reduce the multiplier to x1.  Not sure this was correct, as the call for fire could have also targeted the heavy weapons.

Germans did very well on their Combat Proficiency: their base roll of a 7 increased to 14 due to Elite +4, MI +2, and Leader +1.  This gave a +2 DRM and a roll on the Good Random Combat Event (RCE) Table.  A roll of 8 there resulted in "NSDAP Zeal", with the effects that the Attacker takes an additional step loss and the Defender takes a R+Rt - Retreat and Rout Check.

Combat factors is 61 German / 42 French for an odds ratio of 1.5:1.
Die Roll Modifiers (DRM) for the Germans are +2 Stukas, -2 Bridge, -1 Hedgehog and the +2 from the RCE.
DRMs for the French are -2 Bridge and -1 Hedgehog.

Neither side had the necessary units to get Combined Arms DRMs.

The Germans rolled an 8 + 1 DRM = 9, for a 2 step loss to the French.  This was reduced by 1 for the Hedgehog.

The French rolled a 9 - 3 DRM = 6, for a 1* step loss to the Germans, on top of the 1 step loss from the German RCE.  The * means that the first step loss must come from a supporting unit, though it was not applicable here due to Combined Arms not being in effect.

The Germans lost a step of infantry and the unit of 88's.  I decided I would rather have the Assault gun company for now.  I could have taken more infantry instead of the 88's.

The French lost their Hedgehog due to it absorbing the Retreat.  The also lost the Engineering company.  (Judgement call, I don't plan on dropping the bridge.)
